Mammogram FAQs: What You Need To Know
Mammograms are one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early. Mammography helps radiologists see the normal and abnormal structures in the breasts, including masses, microcalcifications and architectural distortion. Masses can be benign (like cysts, which are fluid-filled), or cancerous. Microcalcifications can also be benign or be a sign of early or local cancer.
Breast Care teams across BILH support the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) recommendations that women aged 40 and older who are at “average risk” for breast cancer have an annual screening mammogram. These women do not have any symptoms or family history of breast cancer.
If you are "at high risk” for developing breast cancer, it may be suggested that you have more frequent mammograms, beginning earlier than age 40, or additional imaging studies such as breast ultrasound or MRI. Additionally, a clinical risk assessment can be performed to individualize a clinical examination and imaging schedule based on your personal level of risk. Contact your medical provider if you have questions about when you should have a mammogram or to perform a clinical risk assessment.
Our breast care team considers individuals at “high risk” for developing breast cancer if they have one or more of the following:
- BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation, or other breast cancer related gene mutations
- Immediate relative (parent, sibling or child) with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation
- Family history of breast cancer
- Previous history of breast cancer, breast ‘atypia,’ or ovarian cancer before menopause
- Previous history of radiation therapy to the chest wall
No, you do not need a referral to schedule a screening mammogram, however, a diagnostic mammogram typically requires one. Schedule your screening mammogram by contacting a BILH location.
