About James Mandell, MD
Dr. James Mandell is the current Distinguished Robert and Dana Smith Professor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and served as Chief Executive Officer of Boston Children’s Hospital and Children's Medical Center for 13 years until retiring from the position in October 2013. During his tenure, Dr. Mandell was a member of the Board of Trustees and Professor of Surgery at HMS.
Prior to joining Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Mandell served as Dean of Albany Medical College and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. He was promoted from Chief of Urology to Dean of Albany Medical College in 1996. Dr. Mandell also served as Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at Albany Medical Center and Executive Medical Director of Albany Medical Center Hospital. Prior to his tenure at Albany Medical College, he was a member of the medical staff at Boston Children's Hospital, advancing to an Associate in Surgery with an Associate Professor appointment at HMS.
Dr. Mandell currently serves as a Director of Bluebird Bio, a clinical-stage company developing gene therapies for severe genetic and orphan diseases. He is also Chair of the Board of the Franciscan Hospital, Chair of the Board of the Harvard Risk Management Company and a member of the Board of Directors of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Dr. Mandell received his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine and his Master of Health Systems Management from Union College.
